This report reviews a large amount of knowledge from the Land Use and Land Cover Change research community (LUCC, a joint IGBP/IHDP project) and is one of the activities of the LUCC Focus 3 Office hosted by the Department of Environmental Sciences, Wageningen University. Part of the writing was funded by the Foundation for the Advancement of Tropical Research (WOTRO) of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) within the project 'Integrating macro-modelling and actor-oriented research in studying the dynamics of land use change in NorthEast Luzon, Philippines'. The authors would like to thank all who contributed to this report, especially the contributions of Isabelle Baltenweck, Jeannette van de Steeg and Koen Overmars and the thoughtful reviews of two anonymous referees. 1 Introduction Land use and land cover change (LUCC) has important impacts on the functioning of socioeconomic and environmental systems with important tradeoffs for sustainability, food security, biodiversity and the vulnerability of people and ecosystems to global change impacts. Land cover change refers to the complete replacement of one cover type by another, e.g. deforestation. Land use change includes the modification of land cover types, e.g. intensification of agricultural management or other changes in the farming system. Land use and land cover changes are the result of the interplay between socioeconomic , institutional and environmental factors. Key to understanding LUCC is to recognize the role of individual decision makers bringing about change, through their choices, on land resources and technologies. A unifying hypothesis that links the ecological and social realms, and an important reason for pursuing integrated modelling of LUCC, is that humans respond to cues both from the physical environment and …

User Generate Spatial Content in Land Administration and Cadastre: Types and Usage
Nowadays, one of the most important factor for better land management are the land administration systems. Therefore, it is necessary accurate and up-to-date data on these systems. Common data collection methods, such as photogrammetry and remote sensing, are usually cost-effective and somewhat time-consuming. So, it is necessary to find new methods for data collection in order to keep land adm...

Introduction Land use reflects the interactive characteristics of humans and the environment and describes how human exploitation works for one or more targets on the ground. Land use is usually defined on the basis of human use of the land, with an emphasis on the functional role of land in economic activities. Land use, which is associated with human activity, is undergoing change over time....

The quantity and variability of soil organic carbon (SOC) is one of the most important indices to determine the effect of land use changes on the soil quality. Regarding long-term changes from rangeland to dry farming in the Roin area of North Khorasan, the objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of long-term land use changes on the SOC in different slope faces and use SOC as an...
متن کاملDesign and Implementation of Integrated System for Urban Land Use Change Modeling
According to urban environment complexity and dynamism and need to targeted land use change, incorporation GIS and PSS in the form of Spatial Planning Support Systems is inevitable. The aim of this study is to develop a spatial planning support system for urban land uses change (ULCMS), such that planners can enter expert knowledge in the form of desired criteria and weights and see their influ...
متن کاملLand use changes detection and spatial distribution using digital and satellite data, case study: Farim drainage basin, Northern of Iran
Land use change may influence many natural phenomena and ecological processes, including runoff, soil erosion, sedimentation and soil conditions. Decreasing of forest area in the North of Iran is one of the critical problems in recent years. The aims of this study are to detect land use changes between 1967 to 2002 using satellite images of Land Sat 7 ETM+ (2002), aerial photos and digital topo...
متن کاملConversion trends of rangelands to dry farming and its effects on erosion and sediment yield in Kardeh drainage basin
Converting rangelands to arable land such as dry farming is widely practiced in many places in Iran. This activity could possibly contribute to the increase in downstream sedimentation. The effects of this activity on downstream watersheds are not well documented for many strategic areas in the country. One such area which is proposed for this study is the Kardeh drainage basin, located in the ...
